Making New Year’s Resolutions That Stick

Half of all people making New Year’s resolutions create health-related goals. Yet, only 35% of people actually stick to these resolutions but the team at P.B. Bell is here to support our residents so they may accomplish their goals!. So, we’ve created a list of tips and tricks for how individuals can set realistic New Year’s resolutions so they can meet and exceed their health-related goals in the new year.

Setting Realistic New Year’s Resolutions

The first tip to keeping your resolutions on track is to set realistic New Year’s resolutions and goals! You can do so by:

  • Choosing measurable goals. Specific goals should be measurable so that you can actually track your progress. For example, “focusing on health and fitness” is not quantitative by itself. However, if you set a goal to be able to run a 5k without stopping in 2022, you can track your progress in a quantifiable way.
  • Limiting your resolutions. Rather than planning to achieve a number of different things, choose one or two specific goals and focus on those with 100% energy.
  • Putting time into planning. You should strategically plan out what goals you want to achieve. Take the time to reflect on what positive changes you want to make in your life so that your goals align with what you truly want to accomplish.

How to Stick to Your Resolutions

Once you have your goals identified, there are a few key things you can focus on to meet and exceed your health-related aspirations.

  • Acknowledge the small steps. The little steps you make within the process of completing a goal should be celebrated as maintaining healthy habits and self-discipline are huge accomplishments within themselves. During the process, make sure you give thanks to yourself for staying on track in order to keep the progress going. Positive reinforcement goes a long way!
  • Learn from past mistakes. In order to stick to your resolutions, you should think about what didn’t work from previous goal settings. Instead of repeating the same mistakes and straying away from any progress, it’s important to be self-reflective and do so proactively to prevent those mistakes from happening again.
  • Turn it into a habit. Practice makes perfect and if you’re trying to perfect your goal, then you need to practice it every day. By turning your goal into a daily habit, you’ll be more likely to stick to it in the long run – it will become second nature. This will help you stay consistent as well in order to meet your goals.
